Photo Submission Guidelines: A General Guide and How-to

By Colin Adair, photo editor Snowboard Canada Magazine

I’ve been shooting photos professionally for a while now but not as long as most people think. I’ve been working at Snowboard Canada for 5 years and been the photo editor for the past 3 years. When I think back to my first submission to a magazine it really makes me laugh. Not a single shot was worthy of any magazine even though I thought I had some real beauties. None of them were properly labeled and the quality was really poor. We all have to start somewhere I guess.

Alien Bees strobes - a 3-year review

Written by BrianGarson,

AB 1600So there’s been a lot of questions about Alien Bees on wheelsandwax.com - a forum I post on a bit so I thought after using them successfully for 3 years I’d post a review on them.

Keep in mind this review is targeted specifically towards action sports photographers. In my case, primarily ski and snowboard photography.

So here’s my take on these things, I’ve had quite the learning experience with them as they were my first big strobe.

Nikon SB-80dx

Written by BrianGarson,

Nikon SB-80dxNikon released the SB-80 dx in 2002 to replace the SB28’s, and it was eventually replaced in 2004. So I don’t think you can find these flashes new anymore, but you can buy them used for fairly cheap (I bought 4 of them for just under $120 usd each off ebay). The flashes are great, they’ve got metal hot shoes so they don’t break easily, they’re tiny, like really small, and they recycle fast, not to mention they’ll keep up to 8fps at 1/64th or 1/128th.  The other great thing about them is the flash duration, 1/1050th at full power!

Release Forms

Written by BrianGarson,

A professional stays on top of their business, you should too. Here’s some release forms that you can use to protect both yourself and your subjects. Make sure to read each form carefully and modify it accordingly to fit your individual company and/or business before using them.
