Photo Pricing FAQ

Written by BrianHockenstein,

So, the number one question that comes up time and time again here on Wheels & Wax goes something along the lines of “Company X wants to buy an image of mine for an ad/website, what am I supposed to charge?”. Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to this question. Every sale you will make will be priced differently based on the terms you negotiate with the client. Important factor include how long they are licensing the image for as well as the specific usage.

Fotoquote, which you will see mentioned time and time again, is a computer program designed by and for working photography professionals that can be used to come up with a price for a photo once you key in all the variables such as usage and length of time.

What follows is an abridged version of a conversation that took place during the winter of 2008 in the closed “pro/apprentice” business forum on Wheels & Wax. The catalyst of the conversation was a request for a rate sheet with cold, hard numbers but as we learned, that is a very dangerous thing and the best way to approach each sale is with a head full of knowledge.
